The Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) outlines the rules for cryptographic modules employed as mechanism that implement security. A cryptographic module is a combination of hardware and/or software that handles cryptographic functions such as encryption, decryption, digital signatures, authentication techniques and random number generation.
