Group you clusters into networks to optimize your mesh topology using a mix of gateway-based and flat-network connections between your clusters, decreasing cross-cluster latencies and transfer costs. Clusters belonging to the same network can access each other directly, without using the cluster gateway. For details, see Cluster network and Attach a new cluster to the mesh.

The vision of Backyards (now Cisco Service Mesh Manager) is to become the go-to solution for SREs and operation engineers to observe and control the health of their services and applications. The service mesh acts as the foundation layer that produces the most important network traffic metrics and traces in a unified way. Release 1.4 was the first step towards this goal, and the 1.5 release keeps the same focus. Backyards 1.5 brings the following significant new features:
- Automatic application health monitoring
- Timeline view of service topology and metrics
- Full UI revamp for a faster and smoother experience

While Backyards is first and foremost a production ready Istio distribution, the latest release is a shift towards an observability tool and dashboard for SREs and operation teams. Backyards 1.4 brings the following significant new features:
- Design and track service level objectives, monitor error budget consumption and service compliance. For details, see Tracking Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
- Configure alerts based on burn rates and SLOs.
- Upgrade the Istio control plane like a canary upgrade.
- Support for Istio version 1.7.
- Better validation of the service mesh state.
- You can access the pod logs from the drill-down view.
